A deeply textured winter landscape painting by Swedish artist, Erik Håfström (1908-1979). It depicts a chilly snow-covered street winding its way around several houses.
Håfström has built up the oils to such a degree that the painting is three dimensional. We’ve never seen this level of impasto on anything we’ve handled here previously. It’s an effect that works well as it seems to emphasise the thickness of the snow.
Aside from his work as a painter, Håfström was also a successful author publishing at least six books in his lifetime. He trained in Spain at the Academy in Madrid and he’s represented in several Spanish museums.
The painting is signed in the lower right and housed in a frame that’s probably the original.
